Two separate accidents recently illustrate the importance of putting your safety first. We need to protect ourselves against other drivers, but also ourselves. A motorcycle accident and a car accident at two separate scenes left two Shawano County men dead last week.

According to the Post Crescent, the motorcycle accident occurred before 3:30 a.m. when officials were notified of the crash. The accident reportedly happened near the intersection of Killdeer Road and State 29, a little west of nearby Wittenberg, Wisconsin.

The driver of the motorcycle, a 19-year-old male, was found dead on State 29 on the eastbound side. He was not wearing a helmet when he apparently lost control of his motorcycle, drove into a ditch and was tossed from his vehicle. He was traveling west on State 29 at the time.

In the other accident, a 44-year-old man was killed in a car accident on County Z. The accident reportedly happened before 12:45 a.m. The Post Crescent reports that the man's car collided with a tree and was found in a ditch by a passerby. Police received the report and headed to the scene near Aniwa at Sugar Bush Road. According to investigators, the man was not using his seat belt when the accident happened. He was confirmed dead at the scene.

Both accidents are still being investigated. It's hard to say for sure, but it's quite likely the driver of the car would have survived if he'd been wearing a seat belt. Likewise, if the motorcyclist had been wearing a safety helmet, he might not have died. It's something to think about the next time you get out on the road.
