People have been trying to get the message out for years to "start seeing motorcyclists." Unfortunately, one driver may not have taken that to heart, and now a man is dead.
A motorcycle accident near Milwaukee has seriously injured one person, in addition to killing another. It apparently happened at the intersection of STH 33 and STH 144 in Washington County. According to police reports, a car was traveling south when it stopped at a stop sign, then continued south on the highway.
After the car drove into the path of an oncoming motorcycle, going west, the motorcycle's passengers were flung from their vehicle. Reports indicate that neither the driver of the motorcycle nor the passenger were wearing protective helmets at the time of the crash.
The driver of the motorcycle died at a Milwaukee hospital after being airlifted directly from the scene of the accident by Flight for Life. His passenger also sustained severe injuries, but there was no word on her condition. The driver and passenger of the car, who are Illinois residents, were treated at the crash site for light injuries.
No further information has been revealed pending an investigation by law enforcement officials.
Sadly, the accident might now serve as a reminder to local motorcyclists to always wear their helmets. It's difficult to say, but if the driver and passenger of the motorcycle had worn proper protection, they may not have sustained such severe injuries upon being ejected. Even if you heed all traffic laws, others may not. A helmet can save a life.
