A 17-year-old Wisconsin high school student was killed Saturday in a rollover car accident in the Stadium Interchange, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office. According to news reports and police records, the girl killed in the crash was a senior at Homestead High School. The car accident occurred when a vehicle, carrying the girl and two other 17-year-old girls, lost control on the ramp from eastbound Interstate 94 to northbound Highway 41 around 11:00 a.m. Saturday.
According to reports, once the vehicle lost control it struck a retaining wall and rolled over before coming to a stop. The SUV skidded between 300 and 400 feet before coming to a stop following the rollover crash. Authorities are still trying to determine the exact cause of the crash. One of the passengers in the car suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken by the Milwaukee Fire Department to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The other passenger and the driver of the driver both suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash but reports did not detail whether they were taken to the hospital following the crash.
The principal of Homestead High School opened the school Sunday to give students a place to grieve over the loss of their friends and classmate. Many left flowers and lit candles in her memory at the Mequon school. The school expressed that it wanted to do whatever it could to help everyone including having counselors on-site on Sunday and Monday for students and teachers to talk to about the incident.
